Mini-Total Knee Replacement

More than 300,000 knee joint replacements are performed in the United States every year. While the procedure is highly successful in straightening misaligned joints, eliminating arthritic pain, and restoring range of motion, recovery and rehabilitation used to be a months-long process.

Surgeons at the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute are performing innovative mini-total knee replacements that significantly reduce recovery time. Conventional knee replacement requires an 8- to 11-inch incision, while mini-total knee surgery focuses on a quadricep-sparing technique that calls for an incision of 5 inches or less.

Special mini-instruments and techniques enable surgeons to implant the artificial knee components without making a long incision in the quadriceps muscle or dislocating the knee cap. The result is less discomfort during recovery, faster return to normal activities (than conventional knee replacement), and long-term pain relief for the majority of patients.

Our surgeons have achieved excellent outcomes in mini-total knee replacements. These procedures are helping residents of the Delaware Valley and beyond live life to the fullest and return to the activities – including sports – they love.
