The Palliative Care Service at Abington is an interdisciplinary consult team that provides comprehensive management of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients who are living with progressive disease or life-limiting illnesses and provide support to their families.
The team discusses the complexity of medical problems, treatment options and the impact on the patient's lifestyle and family. Guidance and support in decision making and goal setting is met with spiritual and counseling support from physicians, nurse practitioners, social worker, pharmacist and chaplain on the team. We involve the house staff in plans for symptom management and family meetings with patients on their inpatient services.
The Palliative Care Team provides education programs for the Department of Internal Medicine residents that include a series of programs on communication, spiritual needs assessment, discussing prognosis, and code status, coordinated with the Department of Medicine's ethics consultant. We also provide elective rotations for residents interested in Palliative Care.
