Mammography/Breast Imaging Services
Abington Health offers mammography services at several of its locations, using the latest computer-aided detection (CAD) digital technology to ensure the most accurate diagnosis. Instead of the x-rays of the breast tissue being stored on film, digital mammography converts the image into a digital picture for review and storage on a computer monitor. This results in image quality that is considered 15% more accurate than film.
Since mammograms compress each breast while the image is captured, you may be afraid of discomfort. But it only lasts a few seconds, and a complete mammogram takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Some women delay having mammograms because the results may show cancer. However, if you start with a baseline mammogram at age 40* (as recommended by the American Cancer Society), you can often detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, when it’s most curable (98% in its earliest two stages).
