Faculty Biographies
Meera Shah, D.O., MBA – AMH Geriatric Fellow
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Born and raised in India, Dr. Shah moved to the U.S. in 1993. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a B.S. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and an M.S. in Chemistry, Dr. Shah moved to Philadelphia to start medical school and meet her husband at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her professional interests within family medicine are geriatrics, pediatrics and osteopathic manipulative medicine. Besides medicine, she enjoys learning about her culture, artwork, cooking and watching movies with her husband. She is currently broadening her geriatric expertise in the Geriatric Fellowship Program at Abington Memorial Hospital. Dr. Shah can be reached at Mshah@amh.org.
Adam T. Chrusch, M.D.
Adam Chrusch is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency training at Abington Memorial Hospital and furthered his training with a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine. He has published and presented his research on knee kinetic and kinematic forces at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine's National meeting. He has also published and presented cases dealing with Chiari malformations related with recurrent concussions and high output congestive heart failure exacerbated by anemia and deep water emersion. Dr. Chrusch's special interests include musculoskeletal medicine, athletic event coverage as well as non-operative treatments dealing with degenerative joint disease. He also has a strong interest in serving the underserved in the North East Philadelphia and Abington areas. Dr. Chrusch can be contacted at achrusch@amh.org.
Mathew M. Clark, M.D., M.A., Associate Director
Dr. Clark is a graduate of The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and Yale University School of Medicine. He also holds an M.A. degree in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica. He completed his Family Medicine residency at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Los Angeles. Prior to joining the Family Medicine faculty at Abington in 1990, he worked in a community health center and an emergency department in Philadelphia. He has also spent extended periods of time doing medical service in Thailand and Mexico. Dr. Clark has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics. He regularly speaks and publishes for a national Family Medicine audience. Areas of interest include procedural medicine, integrative medicine, and physician well-being. Amy L. Clouse, M.D., Associate Director
After earning her B.A. in Biological Sciences with a Minor in Women's Studies from Northwestern University, Dr. Clouse attended the Medical College of Pennsylvania where she received her M.D. degree with Honors. She started post-graduate training in Obstetrics/Gynecology at the Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center and then changed to Family Medicine when she realized that her professional interests in women's health would be better served by this specialty. Dr. Clouse completed her residency training at the West Jersey Family Practice Residency Program in 1998 as Chief Resident.
She brings strong skills and experience in women's health care to our program including obstetrics, menopausal issues, and gynecologic procedures such as colposcopy and endometrial biopsies. She also holds a Certificate for Added Qualifications in Adolescent Medicine and has a special interest in eating disorders. Dr. Clouse speaks nationally on women's health topics and has multiple publications to her credit. She is currently editing a women's health book for primary care providers for which she has written two chapters - The Medical Management of Eating Disorders and Cervical Cancer Detection and Prevention. Pamela A. Fenstemacher, M.D., Associate Director
Dr. Fenstemacher is a graduate of New York University School of Medicine. After completing medical school, she trained in Family Medicine at Overlook Hospital in northern New Jersey, followed by a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine, completed at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice, a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics. Since arriving at Abington Memorial Hospital in 1992, she has continued her interest in geriatrics through teaching, writing and clinical practice. Since joining Abington Family Medicine in 1992 she has been an active medical director of long term care facilities, in1998 becoming a Certified Medical Director and in 2005 becoming a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Directors Association Board of Directors. She has also contributed to the medical literature through publications such as Primary Care Update and Patient Care Magazine and by writing several book chapters and formatting guidelines for handheld computers. She has also lectured on a variety of geriatric and family medicine topics, as well as being on the faculty of The American Medical Directors Association's Core Curriculum in Medical Direction. Gerald J. Hansen, III M.D., Director
Dr. Hansen is a graduate of Trinity College and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his family medicine training at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia and post residency training in family therapy at the Child Guidance Clinic of Philadelphia. Dr. Hansen has over 20 years experience in teaching residents and medical students and has been director of the program for nine years. In addition to his Board certifications in family medicine and pain management, he has a certificate of added qualification in geriatrics and an affiliate certification in marriage and family therapy. Dr. Hansen has served as a hospice medical director for 12 years and lectured regionally and nationally on pain management and end of life care issues. As Chairman of Abington Memorial Hospital's Physicians' Health Assistance Committee, and member of the Board of Directors of the Delaware Valley Physicians' Aid Association, Dr. Hansen has demonstrated a strong commitment to physician health and well-being that extends to the residents of our program. Natalie E. McGann, D.O.
Dr. McGann is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University where she earned B.S. degrees in Biology and Nutrition Science. After college she worked in the bio-tech pharmaceutical industry for several years doing research in oncology before pursuing her medical career. She earned her D.O. from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her Family Medicine training at Abington Memorial Hospital where she served as Chief Resident. As the first Osteopathic physician to join Abington Family Medicine’s faculty, Dr. McGann hopes to help foster the growth of the residents and their use of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. After completing training in hyperbaric medicine and problem wound management, Dr. McGann is proud to be joining the staff at Abington’s Comprehensive Wound Healing Center where she will be one of a team of physicians providing specialized wound care to the Abington community. John J. Russell, M.D., Associate Director
Dr. Russell is a graduate of Temple University and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine training at Abington Memorial Hospital, serving as Chief Resident, and joined the faculty in 1993. He acts as coordinator of the pediatric curriculum for the program. He started and edits Primary Care Update, a quarterly literature review written by the faculty and residents of the program. He is a Contributing Editor for Patient Care magazine and has been a reviewer and contributor to American Family Physician. He has worked on the palm-based guidelines for the American Diabetes Association and The Infectious Disease Society of America. He is also a co-author of the text, Dermatology Skills in Primary Care. He currently sits on the Editorial Board for Pri-Med Online and on the Advisory Board for the North American Women's Health Forum. Dr. Russell lectures extensively to primary care physicians on a national level and has won several resident teaching awards. Neil S. Skolnik, M.D., Associate Director
Dr. Skolnik is a graduate of Union College and Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Following his residency, Dr. Skolnik completed a faculty development fellowship at Jefferson and served as one of the faculty in a small inner city family medicine office. He wrote the book On the Ledge about his experiences there. Dr. Skolnik is widely published in both lay and medical literature and serves as a reviewer for multiple peer review medical journals, including The Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Family Practice and Pediatrics. In addition, he is Editor-in-Chief of Essential Practice Guidelines in Primary Care. He lectures regionally and nationally on a variety of family medicine topics. He also serves as Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine. Currently, Dr. Skolnik's area of research interest is handheld information management. He has worked with numerous national organizations including the CDC, The American Diabetes Association and The Infectious Disease Society of America, organizing guidelines and producing them in Palm OS format. William L. Frangipane, M.D., Obstetrics Faculty
Dr. Frangipane, a summa cum laude graduate of St. Joseph's University, received his M.D. degree from Penn State University College of Medicine and has been an OB/GYN faculty associate since 1997. As well as publishing numerous articles, Dr. Frangipane has written a book on obstetrics and gynecology for primary care practitioners. Twice monthly presentations and case conferences are given by Dr. Frangipane and are an integral part of the OB/GYN curriculum. In 2002, he was the first recipient of the Mandler Award for outstanding contribution and commitment to the education of the family medicine residents.
Warren B. Matthews, M.D. F.A.A.F.P.,
Chairman, Dept. of Family Medicine
Dr. Matthews graduated from Drexel University with a BS in Electrical Engineering before entering Thomas Jefferson Medical College. After receiving his MD degree, he served his Family Medicine residency at AMH and joined the medical staff in 1980. He was appointed department chair in 1986. He leads a busy office practice and has been listed 4 times as a "Top Doc" by Philadelphia Magazine. He serves as the teaching attending on the inpatient service for a week at a time, 6-8 times each year.
Jimmy Joseph Ruiz, M.D., OB/GYN Faculty
Dr. Ruiz received his MD degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine and completed his OB/GYN residency training at Abington Memorial Hospital. Dr. Ruiz has been an OB/GYN faculty associate since 2008 and in 2009, he was the recipient of the Mandler Award for outstanding contribution and commitment to the education of the Family Medicine residents.

Deborah Silver, M.D. is the director of CHOP Pediatric Care at Abington Memorial Hospital. After doing her pediatric residency and general pediatrics fellowship at the University of California in San Diego, Dr. Silver returned to the east coast to work at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, helping to run the inpatient pediatric program located at Abington Memorial Hospital. Dr. Silver is a dedicated clinician and teacher.
