Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many resident positions are there?
A: Seven per year, 21 total.

Q: Does this program have approved osteopathic internships?
A: Yes, the Family Medicine Program welcomes applications from osteopathic students. Three to four AOA-approved osteopathic internships are available each year. While the first year is applied for and credited as a traditional rotating osteopathic internship, acceptance guarantees a position in the tracked Family Medicine Residency Program, totaling three years.  Osteopathic applications should be made through ERAS September 1, 2010 to November 30, 2010. Interviews for osteopathic positions will begin in mid-October 2010.

Q: What are the resident call responsibilities?
A: Interns take call every four to five nights on average.  The majority of their calls, up to six months of the year, cover the pediatric floor.  Second and third year residents are allowed to take the majority of their calls from home and cover admissions for the family medicine inpatient service as well as phone calls from patients in our office and affiliated nursing homes.  Second and third years are on call approximately seven to eight weekends and 15 weekdays over the course of the year.

Q: Are there electives; any away electives?
A: Yes.  There are three electives for use mainly during the third year of residency.  Residents are encouraged to further explore areas of medicine they would like more in-depth exposure to, such as palliative care and sports medicine, or they can use a block for research.  Throughout the year, one half day per week, residents work on a longitudinal elective of their choice.  In addition, residents are allowed to use one elective for an away rotation.  Some recent destinations were Zuni, New Mexico, India, Louisiana, Alaska, Guinea, Honduras, and Russia.

Q: Are there opportunities for publication?
A: Absolutely.  Our faculty has many projects constantly underway, including a monthly clinical guidelines column and on-line CME case studies for Pri-Med.  Primary Care Update is a quarterly magazine published for the hospital by Abington Family Medicine faculty and residents.  Current projects also include updating the newest Manual of Family Practice and collaborating on two new books titled Clinical Guidelines for Primary Care and Infectious Diseases in Primary Care.

Q: Is Abington Memorial Hospital a community hospital?
A: Abington Memorial Hospital is considered a state-of-the-art community teaching hospital, located six miles north of the Philadelphia border.  It is one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the area; however, it still maintains a strong community feeling with plenty of space and high patient satisfaction.  In addition, Abington is affiliated with multiple medical schools and offers multiple residencies including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Family Medicine.

Q: Is Abington a diverse community?
A: The community in Abington is wonderfully diverse, with people of all ages and backgrounds.  A variety of communities thrive here including Korean, Hispanic, and Portuguese populations. We are able to provide interpretation services for all of these diverse populations through certified interpreters when scheduled in advance or via Language Line telephone service for emergency visits. Our office also sees the entire spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds, accepting all insurances and people with no insurance.  In addition, we are the primary care provider for many of the special needs programs in our area, including multiple deaf communities and many group home living facilities.

Q: How much vacation will I have?
A: In the first year there are three weeks of vacation during the year and one week at the end of the first year, as well as one week for conference. Second and third year residents receive three weeks of vacation, plus one week for conference. In addition each resident is allotted three to four personal days yearly.  There are also six paid hospital holidays per year.
