Sleep Evaluation and Diagnosis
Patients at the Sleep Disorders Center receive sophisticated testing and evaluation. An expert sleep physician conducts a comprehensive physical examination and discusses patient sleep habits and history.
If nighttime sleep study is needed, the Sleep Laboratory’s polysomnographic technology provides continuous recordings of sleep-related activities. Patients rest in attractive, comfortable, private rooms.
- EEG (electroencephalogram) – monitors sleep stages
- EKG (electrocardiogram) – evaluates heart while sleeping
- Recording devices to measure:
- Oral and nasal airflow
- Oxygen in blood
- Chest wall movement
- Movement of legs
Daytime multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) and home monitoring are also available.
Data is tabulated through a highly complex computer system. Sleep Disorders Center physicians review the evaluation findings to formulate a diagnosis. The treatment plan is designed according to those results, to fit each individual’s specific sleep profile.
Abington Memorial Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center is fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
