Colon Cancer and Rectal Cancer Treatments

Colorectal cancer patients here benefit from the latest treatment approaches to colon cancer and rectal cancer – including minimally-invasive surgery and access to new developments through clinical trials. Our board-certified and highly experienced medical oncologists, colorectal surgeons, surgical oncologists and radiologists use the most advanced technology to achieve the best results.

Depending upon your diagnosis, your colorectal cancer care might include one or more of these cancer treatments:

Organizing Your Treatment

Your medical oncologist serves as the manager of your colorectal cancer care – evaluating test results, making recommendations, overseeing the development of your treatment plan, administering certain therapies and monitoring your progress. Our medical oncologists work with your primary care provider or referring physician to assure your on-going care.

Colorectal Cancer Nurse Navigator

For patients facing colon cancer, rectal cancer or anal cancer, the colorectal nurse navigator can answer questions, explain treatment options, arrange appointments, coordinate care and offer support. Please contact Kelly Pressler at 215-481-6387 or kpressler@amh.org.

Cancer Inpatient Unit

Sometimes it’s necessary for cancer patients to be admitted to the hospital for treatment. Our dedicated oncology unit in Abington Memorial Hospital has 27 private rooms and provides a full medical/surgical facility. The unit’s highly skilled staff is specially trained in caring for patients in all phases of cancer treatment. Our certified oncology nurses and certified chemotherapy nurses have advanced education in cancer care and therapies. They also provide information and emotional support. The unit has an “open door” visiting policy, with no restrictions by hour or age.

Cancer Pain Management Team

Pain may be managed with oral analgesics, but other options are available if symptoms persist. Our pain management team uses the latest techniques to alleviate pain. Consultations can be provided during regular visits to the medical oncologist or by calling 855-235-7246. The consultation includes a complete pain assessment and treatment recommendations.

Cancer Rehabilitation Services

Our comprehensive cancer rehabilitation services, including physical therapy and lymphedema program, help patients who are recovering from the effects of cancer and its treatment. For more information, please call 215-481-2160.

Cancer Evaluation Services

A team of physicians regularly reviews cancer cases to share expertise across specialty disciplines. These free conferences review diagnostic studies and discuss treatment recommendations for patients as well as for community members seeking second opinions. Suggested options are then discussed with patients and family members. For information about having a colorectal cancer case evaluated, please contact Kelly Pressler at 215-481-6387.
