Prostate Cancer Support

The physicians and staff of The Rosenfeld Cancer Center at Abington Memorial Hospital believe in the importance of treating the whole patient, not just the disease. Our cancer support services help patients and families cope with the physical, psychological, social and spiritual issues that may accompany cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery.


Support Programs

Cancer HelpLine – 800-405-HELP

Cancer Rehabilitation Services – 215-481-2160

Help is available for conditions that may arise from cancer treatment. These services include:

  • Physical Therapy – Patients may be referred by their physicians for physical therapy to learn therapeutic exercises and adaptive routines. This program can help improve flexibility and strength.
  • Lymphedema Program – After cancer treatment, some patients may experience swelling in their arms, legs or other areas. Early recognition of this condition, known as lymphedema, is important. Our specially trained physical therapists offer individualized treatment, including manual lymph drainage and extremity bandaging.
  • Cancer-Related Fatigue Program – Physical therapists and exercise physiologists help patients who are experiencing fatigue restore energy levels. Using an individualized plan, patients improve tolerance to everyday activities.

Gilda’s Club at Abington Memorial Hospital – 215-481-6700

Gilda’s Club provides a free meeting place where men, women and children living with  all types of cancer, and their family and friends, can join together to build social and emotional support. Being with others in a community affected by cancer can decrease isolation and anxiety and increase empowerment. Gilda’s Club at Abington is open on Mondays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., except for the second Monday of each month when it is open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Meetings take place in Abington Memorial Hospital, Widener Building, Garden Training Room, across from the gift shop. Home Care – 215-481-5801

The medical team evaluates a patient’s need for home care. If appropriate, a referral will be made to the Home Care Department. For more information, call 215-481-5801.

Hospice Care – 215-481-5800 (home services)

Hospice is a philosophy of care that recognizes and understands the end of life journey and focuses on the person. The emphasis is on quality of life and controlling disease  symptoms. We provide family-centered care involving the patient and loved ones in decision-making. Services include home hospice care as well as compassionate inpatient, routine and respite care at our beautiful new facility, Abington Hospice at Warminster. Our team of caregivers includes a medical director, nurses, therapists, home health aides, a chaplain, social workers and volunteers. Integrative Medicine – 215-481-6888

Sometimes called alternative, complementary or integrative medicine, services include  acupuncture, massage therapy, pain management, Reiki and yoga. Available to inpatients and outpatients. Man-to-Man Networking Group for Men with Prostate Cancer – 215-481-2795

Co-sponsored with the American Cancer Society, this group provides education, support and encouragement to men diagnosed with prostate cancer. The group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. To learn more, contact Michael Schumacher at 215-481-2795 or mschumacher@amh.org.

Nutrition Counseling – 215-481-2527

Eating healthy, nutritious foods helps maximize quality of life before, during and after cancer treatment. Learn how to manage side effects of therapy while maintaining a healthy weight. Individual counseling by a registered dietician is available at no charge for patients and their family members to address nutrition concerns. For more information, please call 215-481-2527.

Pain Management Team – 855-235-7246

The pain management team, part of the Department of Anesthesiology, utilizes the latest techniques to alleviate pain that cancer patients might experience. Consultations can be provided during regular visits to the medical oncologist or appointments may be made by calling 855-235-7246. The consultation includes a complete pain assessment and recommendations for treatment.

Palliative Care Service – 215-481-6839

This service fosters open communication in difficult situations and the recognition of individual choices throughout serious illness. Patients may receive support for their medical, emotional and spiritual needs through the Palliative Care Service team. These physicians, nurses, social workers, and chaplain ensure that pain and other symptoms are managed, talk about treatment options and possible effects and discuss patient wishes. Van Service – 215-481-4845

The hospital's van service is available, at a nominal charge, for patients who need  transportation to radiation and chemotherapy treatments. To arrange a ride, call 215-481-4845.

Wig Bank – 215-481-2579

Wigs are available free to anyone who is experiencing hair loss. Wig recipients do not need to be patients of The Rosenfeld Cancer Center.

Support Professionals

Prostate Cancer Nurse Navigator – 215-481-2795

Our prostate cancer nurse navigator, Michael Schumacher, RN, MSN, OCN, provides support and information to patients who are newly diagnosed or in active treatment. The nurse navigator can answer questions, make appointments, help coordinate care and offer support throughout the treatment process. Pastoral Care – 215-481-2700

Staff members from Pastoral Care are available 24-hours-a-day to help inpatients, outpatients and their families address the spiritual and religious concerns related to diagnosis, treatment and hospitalization. Visits with an individual’s own clergyperson may also be arranged.

Social Workers – 215-481-2579

Professional social workers provide many services: counseling, emotional support, assistance in planning for home care, referrals to assisted living communities and nursing homes, and help in obtaining financial assistance for those who demonstrate  need. After a cancer diagnosis, patient and family counseling is available immediately, as well as anytime throughout the patient’s treatment and recovery.
