Rehabilitation Medicine
Rehabilitation Medicine works to restore the optimal function of people with various physical disabilities. A physiatrist, a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation, leads the Rehabilitation Medicine team of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology.
Electrodiagnostic studies, including electromyography, are used to diagnose neuromuscular disorders and to evaluate the individual's potential for therapy and functional improvement. These studies are performed and interpreted by a physiatrist.
The Division of Rehabilitation Medicine also provides specialized services at various locations. The hospital is noted for its comprehensive in-patient Rehabilitation Unit, where patients and their caregivers relearn the activities of daily living. Other locations for Rehabilitation Medicine include Fort Washington, the Abington Health Center – Schilling in Willow Grove and an aquatics therapy program at The Becoming Center in Ambler. Featured services within the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine include multidisciplinary programs targeting orthopaedics, post-cardiac surgery care, post-stroke rehabilitation, treatment of patients with fibromyalgia and amputees. Cancer rehabilitation services also include a specialized program for lymphedema care. Physiatrists also provide a variety of services, including acupuncture.
