At Abington, our pediatric services are enhanced by an inpatient program that provides high-quality pediatric care in a convenient setting under the renowned expertise of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Care Network. The program provides 24-hour coverage by CHOP physicians for pediatric inpatients, as well as consultations by pediatric specialists in cardiology, gastroenterology and pulmonology.
The medical director and her associates are faculty members at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and staff members at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Physicians affiliated with the program are board-certified pediatricians or pediatric subspecialists. All nurses on the unit have pediatric experience and additional certification in advanced pediatric skills.
In addition to excellent medical care, children and their families are given special attention that is part of our philosophy of family-oriented care. Because parents are encouraged to play an active role in the child's care, they may visit at any time. Siblings may visit by arrangement, and families may make use of the unit's special play area. Very comfortable sleeping arrangements are available for parents; parents staying overnight receive a complimentary breakfast. Most rooms on the unit are private. If a child remains in the hospital for a long period, parents are eligible for discount parking. Children may be admitted to the program if their private doctor refers them to the inpatient service or if their doctor is already on staff at Abington Memorial Hospital.
Specialists from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Care Network also provide outpatient services in a full range of care as well as those requiring close inpatient medical supervision. In addition, physicians are on call for consultation in Abington's Emergency Trauma Center. Transport service is available between Abington and Children's Hospital for children requiring the very specialized care available at Children's Hospital.
